My Old Toys

- A Few Fun Photos -

Just like me, my toys are old, well used, and showing their miles.  But they still generally work… well, most of the time—sort of.  I just like the old stuff—before everything from cars to refrigerators became ‘hackable!’  And I’m very VERY lucky that Kat does, too.

If interested, the following links provide some third-party detail on each of the toys shown.

The motorcycle is a 1986 BMW R80rt (Airhead).  I had a ’71 R75/5 back in the day, but had to sell it one term for tuition.  I finally replaced it with a 15-year newer version of essentially the same machine, which I mostly use for solo moto-camping trips around the mountains of Idaho, Montana & Wyoming, and to run errands here around Teton Valley.

The airplane is a 1969 twin-engine turbo Cessna Skymaster (T337D).  This was my second airplane, after initially owning and flying a straight-legged C-182.  I used the turbo twin to grow my small software business, which ultimately had customers from Washington State to New York State.  Then later I used it to fly scenic tours in the Tetons, and up to Alaska.  I also flew it a lot in the Bahamas, to fly and scuba dive the Out Islands (Fly/Dive Bahamas).

The big red panel truck is a 1962 4WD Dodge  Power Wagon Town Panel.  I moved to Teton Valley in 1979 in this panel, with my dog and all my worldly possessions in the back.  I later used it for my residential snow removal business (SnowBiz), which I started after I sold my software company.  Then Kat & I used it for 12 years to pull our commercial Asian food service trailer (Thaidaho Asian Treats) to local events and festivals.

The white 4WD pickup is a 1960 Willys Utility Pickup.  This is my second Willys; my first was a brown 1952 model, but it wouldn’t roll down the highway at more than 45mph.  This ’60 model has an overdrive, so it rolls along at all of 55mph!  It’s my daily driver work truck.

The little black sports car is a 1959 Triumph TR3A.  I fell in love with the TR3’s as a 14-year old, because there was a British Racing Green TR3 for sale near my house.  $800, I’ll never forget.  I learned how to work hard that summer, but also got my first lesson in being ‘a day late and a dollar short.’  Many decades later I found a non-running model online, and had it trucked to Victor.  My friend Lenny did most of the frame-off restoration, and I did as much of the mechanical work as I could.  It turned out worth the wait.
