Palau & Guam

- scuba diving in Micronesia -

a scuba diving paradise

I’ve been to Guam a couple of times, but only as part of layovers when flying to or from Micronesia for scuba diving.  The island is pretty, and I’m sure it has much more to offer than I saw.  Still, below are a few fun and pretty photos from my trips.

Palau, on the other hand, is a scuba diving paradise.  Without question, this was the best scuba diving of my life.  I spent a few nights at Caroline’s Resort in Koror, which at the time was a beautiful and affordable hillside bungalow resort.  Looking at the current website, the resort appears to have been upscaled, a lot!

I rented a car in Palau, and the interesting thing about driving there is while they drive on the right, like we do, all the cars are from Japan with right hand drive!  So you drive on the right with right-hand drive cars, and thus can’t see around the traffic in front of you!

I was on Palau in 2004, to go out on the Ocean Hunter I for a week’s worth of diving.  The Ocean Hunter I was a small three-cabin motor-sail boat used, as a liveaboard for diving.  With just three cabins, there were only six divers on the boat, with a crew of three: skipper, dive master and cook.  And with the boat being so small, it could get in, out and around the Rock Islands where the bigger liveaboards just couldn’t go.

When I look at the Ocean Hunter website today, they’re now using the Ocean Hunter III, a very large liveaboard with a dedicated chase/dive boat.  This is just starkly different from the experience of the little motor-sail boat I was on, where you could get in/out of the water directly from the boat.  I remember the food was awesome, and the diving was literally out of this world.  If you’re interested in diving, you can see my under-water (UW) photos on my Scuba – Palau Page.

I took many of the below photos from the deck of the Ocean Hunter I, as we motored our way around the Rock Island from dive site to dive site.  You can Click on any of the photos to launch a slideshow starting at that point.
