Scuba Diving in the Caribbean
The big difference between scuba diving and flying—two of my passions—is the viscosity of the fluid. In both instances you are flying through a fluid: one is atmosphere, the other is water. The length of your flights are limited by the amount of fuel you carry; just as the length of your dives are limited by the amount of air that you carry. Winds in aviation are analogous to currents in diving. And there are very real technical limitations that govern how high you can fly, and how deep you can dive.
In working on this Caribbean diving page, I couldn’t find most of my UW photos. I decided this was a mixed blessing, because if I found them, the page might be 10X longer and 10X more boring than it is! So while I will continue to look for my other UW photos, here are a few from dive trips to the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the US Virgin Islands.
I was a PADI Advanced Open Water diver, with an underwater photography cert. My dive trips to the Bahamas were all self-flown Fly/Dive trips using my Cessna T337, to various out islands, such as Cat Island, Long Island, Crooked Island, Andros Island, etc. As I write this, all these trips were 20+ years ago—before climate change started bleaching the coral reefs—and back then the diving in the Caribbean was stunning! Great visibility, healthy coral reefs and walls, amazing diversity and the occasional pelagic.
You can Click on any photo below to launch a slideshow starting at that point. If interested, you can see more of my Bahamas flying photos, here; and/or some photos of the islands themselves, here. If you like the UW photos, below, then check out my Scuba: Palau Page and my Scuba: Truk Lagoon Page
