Carhenge, Nebraska

Carhenge: worth the stopover!

Many years ago, back when I was flying scenic tours for tourists around the Tetons, someone hired me to fly them to Alliance, Nebraska.  I can’t remember why—it seems like they had a business meeting about buying something—but it was just a quick out and back day trip.  Upon landing in Alliance, my client was off to his meeting, and I had some hours to waste before the return flight.  The FBO had a loaner, so I took it for a drive around Alliance.  That’s when I found Carhenge.  So fun!

There is now a wonderful Website for Carhenge, that provides a fun read about its history, and a little about the family who built it.  It was built in 1987 as a memorial to the artist’s dad, who had farmed the spot.  For me, I just happened to find it on the side of the road, and, fortunately, stopped to take a look.

I enjoyed wasting time here, walking around and sincerely admiring the work and creativity.  Obviously the site is humorously modeled after Stonehenge, and is built to scale.  I was particularly taken by the inclusion of an old Willys pickup, sitting atop the installation, so I’ve included a photo of my own Willys pickup for reference.

Carhenge itself may not constitute a reason for making Alliance, Nebraska the destination of your next trip, but if you find yourself wandering nearby, it’s well worth the visit.  I added a location map to my photos below.  The address is: 2151 Highway 87, Alliance, NE.

Below are some photos from my visit (sorry, I didn’t have my good camera).  You can Click on any photo to launch a slideshow starting at that point.  If you have any questions or problems with the website, or if you just want to chat about Carhenge, reach out and Contact Me.
